Keeping You Safe

What is an ENG 1 Medical?

A seafarer (ENG 1) medical confirms that you are fit to safely carry out your duties at sea, both during routine work and in emergency situations. It helps identify health conditions that could cause sudden incapacity, require urgent care offshore, or pose a risk to crew and passengers.

All ENG 1 assessments are carried out in line with:

  • Maritime Labour Convention (MLC)

  • Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)

  • MCA medical standards (MSN 1886)

Certificates are normally issued on the day, unless further information is required.

Who needs an ENG 1?

You need an ENG 1 certificate if you are:

  • Captain or in charge of a ship

  • Serving on a merchant vessel

  • A seafarer of any rank

  • Working on a fishing vessel over 24m

  • Working on a smaller vessel but at sea for more than 72 hours or more than 200 miles from the UK

  • Working on any vessel inspected in a foreign port

  • Applying for a UK Certificate of Competency (CoC)
