What is an OEUK Medical?
An OEUK medical is a specialist fitness-for-work assessment for people who work, or are preparing to work, on offshore installations.
Offshore workers may live and work in remote environments where access to medical care is limited. Their work may also involve helicopter travel, emergency evacuation, physically demanding tasks, shift work and extended periods away from shore.
The assessment considers whether an individual’s health is compatible with these demands and whether they can safely undertake offshore work without creating an unacceptable risk to themselves or others.

Is an OEUK medical the same as an OGUK medical?
Yes. The assessment was previously known as an OGUK medical because the industry body responsible for the medical guidance was called Oil & Gas UK.
Oil & Gas UK subsequently became Offshore Energies UK, or OEUK. The current name is therefore an OEUK medical, although employers, recruiters and offshore workers still frequently use the terms OGUK medical and OGUK offshore medical.

Who needs an OEUK medical?
An OEUK medical may be required by anyone who needs to travel to or work on an offshore installation in the UK offshore energy sector.

What does an OEUK medical include?
An OEUK medical considers your health in relation to the demands and risks of working offshore.
The assessment will normally include:
Confirmation of identity
A review of your medical history
Discussion of current health conditions and symptoms
Review of prescribed medication
Height and weight measurements
Blood pressure and pulse measurement
Vision assessment
Colour-vision assessment where applicable
Hearing assessment, including audiometry where applicable
Urinalysis where applicable
A clinical examination by an OEUK-registered medical examiner
The precise content may vary according to your medical history, examination findings, offshore role and the applicable OEUK guidance.
Additional information or further investigations may occasionally be required before the medical examiner can reach a final decision.
What should I bring to my OEUK medical?
Please bring:
Valid photographic identification, such as a passport or driving licence
Your current or previous OEUK or OGUK medical certificate, if applicable
Your glasses or contact lenses if you use them
An up-to-date list of prescribed medication, including doses
Relevant medical reports or specialist letters
Details of any significant medical conditions, surgery or recent treatment
Any forms or instructions supplied by your employer, recruiter or installation operator

Do I need to disclose medical conditions or medication?
You should provide the medical examiner with complete and accurate information about your health, medication and medical history.
Having a medical condition or taking prescribed medication does not automatically mean you cannot work offshore.
The examiner will consider:
The examiner may need additional information from your GP or specialist before deciding whether you meet the relevant medical standard.
How the condition affects you
Whether it is stable and appropriately managed
The likelihood of deterioration or an emergency offshore
Whether medication could affect safe working
The practical demands of your offshore role
Whether appropriate treatment and monitoring are in place
What are the possible outcomes of an OEUK medical?
The OEUK medical examiner will explain the outcome of your assessment and any next steps.
An unrestricted certificate
You meet the applicable medical fitness standard for offshore work and a certificate can be issued for the appropriate period.
A certificate with a shorter validity period or restriction
A shorter certificate or specified restriction may be appropriate where a health condition requires earlier review or particular limitations apply.
Further medical information or investigation
The examiner may require information from your GP or specialist, recent test results or an additional investigation before reaching a final decision.
The medical standard is not currently met
In some circumstances, the examiner may determine that the required medical standard is not currently met. The reasons for the decision and any available next steps will be explained to you.
The outcome is based on an individual clinical assessment. A diagnosis alone does not necessarily determine whether someone is fit for offshore work.
How long is an OEUK medical certificate valid?
A standard OEUK medical certificate may be valid for up to two years. However, a shorter period may be specified where earlier review is clinically appropriate or required under current guidance.
The expiry date will be shown on your certificate.
A certificate may also require review before its stated expiry date if there is a significant change in your health. This could include:
A new medical diagnosis
A change in prescribed medication
A hospital admission
Deterioration in an existing condition
Surgery or significant injury
A medical evacuation from an offshore installation
If your health changes after your certificate has been issued, seek advice from an OEUK-registered medical examiner before returning offshore.
Where is an OEUK medical certificate accepted?
The OEUK medical standard is intended for people working in the UK offshore energy industry.
Under mutual recognition arrangements, a standard OEUK medical certificate will generally also be accepted in Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. Acceptance elsewhere remains at the discretion of the relevant country, employer or installation operator.
Location-specific or restricted certificates may not be covered by mutual recognition arrangements.
Always confirm the requirements with your employer, recruiter or installation operator before arranging your medical, particularly if you will be working outside the UK sector.
OEUK medical or ENG1 medical: which do I need?
OEUK and ENG1 medicals are different assessments intended for different working environments.
An OEUK medical assesses fitness to work on offshore energy installations under OEUK guidance.
An ENG1 medical is a statutory seafarer medical issued by an MCA-approved doctor for people working at sea in roles covered by maritime medical standards.
Some people may need one certificate, while others may require both depending on their role, vessel, destination and employer.
