Running from 23 to 29 September this year, Occupational Health Awareness Week (OHAW) explains what occupational health is and the value it provides to workplace wellbeing. The week is facilitated by the Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM).

As a company who prides itself on providing occupational health, Insight Workplace Health are delighted to be involved. Occupational health services help mitigate and manage long-term or short-term health problems, as well as helping take organisational wide steps to reduce sickness absence.

Research from SOM shows that occupational health is the most effective way of managing the issue of employee long-term absence from work.

The most common workplace health problems are mental health and musculoskeletal-related conditions; however, many other health concerns can be created as a result of a poor work environment. Occupational health providers collaborate with staff and employers to develop solutions to prevent harm, protect staff, and enable those with ill health to continue working, with adaptations if
necessary.

Occupational health interventions have also been shown to help people with disabilities and long-term conditions stay in work and even increase productivity across the workforce. In fact, a report published by SOM in 2022 found that investing in OH pays off, e.g. a £1 investment in OH leads to £1.93 saving in absenteeism costs or a £2.35 saving in medical costs.
